Overview

League of Legends stands as a globally renowned video game, boasting a vast player base and offering diverse content. The mobile platform caters specifically to the player community, serving their needs while they are away from their desktops. With features such as social chatting, news updates, live streaming, and esports coverage, the redesigned application prioritizes a user-centric approach. Through extensive user research surveys, I crafted a more intuitive content structure, ensuring that players can navigate seamlessly and have a smoother experience managing their social interactions within the platform.

Challenge

The current state of the platform lacks adequate focus on content structure, resulting in an overwhelming experience for users who are inundated with an excessive amount of information. Moreover, the advanced nature of Esports as a topic makes it less approachable for new players seeking to familiarize themselves with the game. Additionally, users face challenges when it comes to managing their friends, and the platform offers limited options for effectively accomplishing their desired goals. These issues highlight the need for improvements in content organization, user onboarding, friend management, and goal execution to enhance the overall user experience.

Research

After my initial assessment, I observed certain issues regarding new player familiarization and friend management system that appeared to be misaligned with the desktop version. To gain a deeper understanding of these challenges, I conducted a comprehensive research study aimed at uncovering the root causes and clarifying the extent of the problem.

Define

I meticulously analyzed the user scenarios, taking into account the unique context-specific details and the thoughts and emotions of different types of fictional players with diverse backgrounds at each stage. This approach enables me to shape my design strategy effectively and provides me with a clear reference target throughout the design process. By considering the specific needs and experiences of these user personas, I can ensure that the final design resonates with and caters to a wide range of users.

Design solution #1

Game library
New users who are not yet familiar with the game are less likely to engage with esport-related content. Recognizing the importance of providing basic information to onboard new users effectively, I implemented five prominent in-game position icons. These icons enable users to quickly identify and explore their favorite positions and champions. By simply tapping on a champion's icon, users can discover engaging and visually appealing content that fuels their passion. To enhance the user experience, I incorporated a "like" feature, allowing players to stay updated on champion updates with each patch. Additionally, considering that many players are drawn to the game by its appealing skins, I integrated a section showcasing attractive skins, making it easy for users to share their excitement with others.

Design solution #2

Friend Management
In order to align the app version with the features available on the desktop, users now have the ability to conveniently sort their friends. By tapping the three-dot option bar, users can easily choose to delete friends or move them to different lists. Furthermore, they are welcome to create new lists or modify the viewing method, providing a clean and organized environment for checking friend requests. Previously, users who had numerous lists or in-game friends on the desktop version found it overwhelming to locate their friends on the mobile app. These updates significantly streamline the process for users to connect with and manage their friends, enhancing the overall user experience.

Outcome

As a designer embarking on my first UI/UX project, I have discovered a newfound appreciation for the power of empathy in my work. It is a delightful realization to witness my potential to understand users on a deeper level. As a student fresh off completing my inaugural UI/UX project, I find myself captivated by the joy of conducting user research. I am immensely grateful that, as UI/UX designers, we have the opportunity to apply our creativity to solve problems and enhance user experiences. Throughout this intensive four-week project, I have actively sought and absorbed critique from diverse perspectives, including my professor and classmates. As a result, I have developed a unique viewpoint for my own case study and I believe this will help me along the way in my design career.
